Will Zeolite work on already smelling grass

Zeolite is a preventative solution for the smell of dog urine that can come with artificial grass. We don’t recommend using it if the grass already smells. While it won’t make the smell worse, it also won’t fix an existing issue. In that case, upgrading the area and installing new grass with Zeolite from the beginning is better.

That said, we recently got an interesting question: “If I clean the grass and remove the smell, will Zeolite work?”

Honestly, we hadn’t considered that option before. So, we took a step back, did some thinking, and did some research.

Will cleaning the grass and then adding Zeolite work?

The simple answer is it depends. It depends on the state that the grass is in. We will detail all of this below so you know if this will work for you or if you need to replace and prevent it from happening again.

Scenario 1 - Best case

If your grass has only been down a short time, doesn't smell that bad, or your dog is new, this would be the best case. With a slight smell, you can use our artificial grass cleaner and give the area a good clean. Doing this should remove the smell from the area. For best results, see our at-home maintenance bundle (depending on the size you may need extra cleaner.

If the smell is removed and the cleaning process has worked (it may take a few rounds), you should be ready to install your zeolite. Installing zeolite is a simple process.

7kg per sqm, spread it over the area as evenly as possible, then use a stiff brush or power brush to set the zeolite in place. Not only will the zeolite help to stop the smell, it also has the benefits of keeping the grass collar and helping it to stand up straighter for longer.

Scenario 2 - Worst case

If the above doesn’t apply to you, maybe the garden has been down for a long time and the smell is too bad to clean, or the smell is stuck in the membrane/base works. In this case, you will need to get a professional out and look at replacing the area. You may need to do the entire thing, or just the grass and membrane.

Regardless of what needs replacing. If you do decide to replace it. We recommend getting the zeolite in as soon as possible to prevent this from happening again.
