Installing artificial grass on a flat roof or balcony

Installing artificial grass on a roof or balcony is something we get asked about often. You may be surprised, but it's actually one of the simplest ways you can install artificial grass. We will start by saying, that this method requires two things. A piece of artificial grass, as close to the size of the area that you need, and a knife.

You may be looking at a grey boring roof or balcony, artificial grass is something that may change the entire look of your outdoor space forever. In this blog, we will show you how simple it is to install artificial grass on your roof or a balcony correctly.

The Install

When installing artificial grass on a roof or balcony, consists of only 3 steps.

Step 1:

You want to start by measuring your area and seeing what size piece of grass you will need. Ensure when ordering the grass to order slightly over the area size and cut the grass into place. After this, you can order the right one online. You can get samples first for free from us to ensure you get the artificial grass that you like.

Step 2:

Once you have your artificial grass, ensure the area that it is going to be laid on is cleaned thoroughly and there is no debris under the grass. When ordering your artificial grass, be sure to add some extra on the length and width. This will leave some waste but will ensure your artificial grass is left with a snug fit.

Step 3:

Finally, you want to install a piece of artificial grass. Get your grass laid out in the area and you should have a little bit of excess that needs to be cut down to ensure a snug fit. Now you should have a neat snug-fitting piece of artificial grass,  we recommend securing it down using something like a plant pot as you don’t want to glue it or drill holes into your balcony or roof.

You can also purchase a rubber edging if it's not a full area of grass, this will help give the area a nice flush finish.

FAQ's

How do you secure it down?

We suggest securing the grass by placing something heavy in the corners such as plants, or stone.

How does it drain?

The artificial grass will slow the drainage down, however it will still drain as normal.

Can it go on a sloped roof?

We advise against installing it on a sloped roof. This is because of the way it is secured down (mentioned above). Installed on a sloped roof, the artificial grass will eventually walk off the roof.
